Frequently asked questions

Which files can I import?

MP4, M4V and MOV video files, with or without embedded metadata. Use File › Import Files (⌘I) or Import Directory (⇧⌘I), drag files or folders onto the Reelhaus window, or add a watched folder. See Metadata.

Does Reelhaus copy or change my videos?

No. Reelhaus reads your files where they are and never modifies them. The library stores metadata and artwork; the videos stay in their original location.

I moved or renamed a file and it no longer plays.

Reelhaus usually follows renamed or moved files on the same disk. Inside a watched folder, files that disappear are marked File missing; put the file back or remove the item in Settings › Folders › Remove from Library…. For files imported individually, remove the item and import it again from its new location.

My files are on an external drive or network share.

That works as long as the drive or share is connected and mounted when you play. If playback fails with error 1, reconnect the drive, then re-import the file.

I changed a file's metadata. How do I update it in Reelhaus?

Right-click the item and choose Update Metadata. To change title, show, season, episode, year, genres, description or artwork inside Reelhaus, choose Edit Metadata… (⌥⌘E); the video file is not modified.

What is "Continue Watching"?

The Home tab lists movies and episodes you stopped between about 5% and 95%, plus recently added items. Your position is saved every 10 seconds. Right-click an item and choose Remove from Continue Watching to hide it.

Can I watch my library on another device?

Reelhaus includes an optional local API for your own devices. See Local API.

Does Reelhaus collect my data?

No. There is no tracking, analytics or account. See the Privacy Policy.

Metadata

Reelhaus builds your library from the metadata embedded in each MP4/M4V/MOV file (the same tags the Apple TV app uses). Files without tags are imported too: Reelhaus reads the title, year, show, season and episode from the file and folder names, for example The Matrix (1999).mp4, Dark.S01E02.1080p.mp4, Friends 1x05.m4v or Dark/Season 1/Episode 2.mp4. You can fix anything afterwards with Edit Metadata…. For the richest library (cast, crew, descriptions) these tags are recommended:

ItemRequired tags
MovieMedia kind Movie, Title. Recommended: release date, genre, description, artwork, cast, director.
TV episodeMedia kind TV Show, Title (episode name), TV show name / Artist, season number, episode number. Recommended: release date, description, artwork.

To add or fix tags, use a metadata editor such as Subler (free). If Subler is installed, Reelhaus can open a file in it from the item's menu (Open in Subler). After editing, choose Update Metadata in Reelhaus.

Tip: genre icons are matched by name (Action, Comedy, Drama, Documentary, Sci-Fi, Thriller…). Custom genres are supported and shown with a generic icon.

Error codes

CodeMeaningWhat to do
#1Reelhaus could not reopen a media file (bookmark could not be resolved).Make sure the drive or share is connected. If the file was moved, renamed or deleted, remove it from the library and import it again.

#4The file could not be accessed during import.Check that the file still exists and that your user can read it, then import it again.
#5No longer used (files with missing tags are imported using their file name).—
#6Unknown error while reading the file.Make sure the file plays in QuickTime Player. If it does, contact us with the error message.
#7No longer used (files without metadata are imported using their file name).—

#9Access to the selected or dropped folder was denied.Choose the folder again with Import Directory.
#10A file inside the selected folder could not be read.Check the file's permissions, or import it individually.
#11A folder could not be added as a watched folder.Check that the folder or drive is available and readable, then add it again in Settings › Folders.

Watched folders and drag and drop

In Settings › Folders, click Add Folder…. Reelhaus imports the videos in that folder and its subfolders and then checks for new files automatically (while the app is open, when you return to it and every 15 minutes; Scan Now checks immediately). Reelhaus only reads watched folders: it never changes, moves or deletes your files. Items you remove from the library are not imported again. If a drive is disconnected, its folder is shown as unavailable and nothing is removed. Files that failed to import are listed under Problems.

You can also drag videos or whole folders onto the Reelhaus window to import them.

Subtitles (.srt, .vtt)

The built-in player shows external subtitle files. Name them like the video, optionally with a language code: Movie.srt, Movie.es.srt, Movie.en.vtt. They are found automatically when the video is in a watched folder. For videos imported individually, move the mouse over the player, open the subtitles menu (top right) and choose Choose Subtitle File…; Reelhaus remembers the file. The same menu turns subtitles on or off and switches language. Subtitles embedded in the video are available from the player's own subtitle button.

Local API (advanced)

Off by default. Turn it on in Settings › API. By default it only accepts connections from the same Mac; enable Allow connections from other devices to use it on your home network. Every request must include your access token (shown in Settings › API) as Authorization: Bearer <token> or ?token=<token>. Generate a new token at any time to revoke old clients. Only use it on networks you trust.

Preguntas frecuentes

Ver Metadatos.

Carpetas vigiladas y arrastrar y soltar
